Problem
Cannot turn on Automatic Updates. Cannot start Automatic Updates service and receive 1058 error

Cause
Spyware, service configuration, corrupted service

Solution

1. Use SUPERAntiSpyware tool to scan and remove spyware. Most of Automatic Update problems are caused by spyware and can be fixed by this tool:

2. Reinstall Automatic Updates
a. Start- Run - type: Inf. Click OK to open the INF folder.
b. Find au.inf file, right click on it and choose Install. Then, Automatic Updates will be reinstalled automatically.
c. You may be prompted to select the installation source. Pls browse to C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 or C:\Windows\System32

3. Enable current hardware profile on Automatic Updates service.
This is the solution from Microsoft. But this method is outdated. Just FYI: support.microsoft.com/kb/896224
